This is a great setup. I ordered this setup a week ago. I really needed my espresso fix and with level 5 lockdown I couldn’t really enjoy drinking coffee outside my house. This machine is awesome and makes nicer espresso, flat whites, lathes and cappuccinos than my local coffee shop.
The Gaggia classic is really well built, everything has a nice weight to it and I think it will last a long time. Its a really popular machine so you can find loads of videos online about how to get the best out of it.
I was a bit hesitant about the grinder because I couldn’t find a lot about it online, but after seeing it and using it for the week I really like it. Again it is really well made, its has a cast aluminium body with very few plastic parts. It grinds 18g of espresso grinds in about 10-15 seconds, it doesn’t grind too hot. I really like the timer, when setting up the grinder you set the grind size and then set a timer on the side of the machine to time the grind. You can then simply take the portafilter out of the gaggia and insert it into the grinder until it hits a button, just hold the portafilter into the button until the timer stops the grinder. After dialing in the grinder and running about 250g of old stale coffee through it (google seasoning grinders) I got a consistent output weights using the timer e.g 18g +/-0.3g which is close enough for me. There is a little bit of grind retention but not that much, I normally just grind 4-5g if it hasn’t been used overnight and dump it that clears any old grinds from the day before.
I ordered this set of a Tuesday and it took about a week to arrive in Ireland, but I think this was because of the confusion of Christmas time and also Brexit just happened. Everything was really well packaged and they even gave me 2 x 500g bags of gaggia espresso beans for free.
Really recommend this set to anyone wants to get more into coffee or wants a new hobby. There is a bit of a learning curve to get up and running correctly but it makes great coffee if you put the effort in.
